Ways You Can Help People With Disabilities

It’s easy to take our physical limitations for granted. Perhaps we were born with them or maybe they developed slowly over time. Either way, it is important that we keep these things in mind and create an environment where people with disabilities can thrive just as equally as everyone else. There are a number of ways you can help someone with a disability and this article will list several of them.

         Volunteering your time is another great way for you to help out someone with disabilities. There are many opportunities available in most communities, but one thing that they all have in common is that they are incredibly important to the families in need of assistance. Check with your local United Way organization to see what volunteer opportunities are listed in your area.

         There are also many non-profit organizations that provide support for people with disabilities and their families including The American Cancer Society, SHARE, National Council on Aging, Autism Speaks, Mel Trotter Ministries of Michigan, Muscular Dystrophy Association, March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, Make-A-Wish Foundation International Inc., and many many others.

         You can also provide support for people with disabilities by providing them with the opportunity to engage in their interests such as sports, movies, music, and other hobbies that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. If you’re interested in doing this but don’t know where to begin, try starting a fundraiser that focuses on having people donate money towards adaptive technologies or participate in sporting events that allow people with disabilities to compete alongside able-bodied players.

         Lastly, there are numerous ways you can help out by including those who have physical handicaps as part of your everyday interactions. Whether it is an employer introducing an employee with a disability as part of a team at work during a staff meeting or whether it’s sharing jokes with a friend with a disability over the phone, recognition of people’s abilities can benefit everyone in the long run.

         Our society tends to value being able-bodied because it allows us to perform everyday tasks without difficulty but we should never take our physical capacities for granted. Being disabled isn’t something anyone asks for but we can do our best to help individuals with physical handicaps live their lives the same way we want to live ours: without difficulty.

     1 .   Don’t stare at someone who is different from you and please don’t point out their differences either.

             2 .   Please do not pretend that someone’s condition doesn’t exist or that they don’t notice it themselves; there is nothing wrong with considering it.

             3 .   Offer to help someone with a disability, even if they declined your offer before.

     4 .   Please look at people as equals and not as some kind of a burden on others.

     5 .   Never treat a person who is disabled as a child because they have feelings just like everyone else and no one deserves to be treated differently for being different.

        6 .    Acknowledge that being disabled doesn’t mean you’re any less capable than someone who isn’t physically limited in their daily life. In fact, some disabilities actually give the people who have them stronger spirits, some have said that their journey has given them more knowledge regarding how fragile the human body is.

     7 .    If someone asks for help, please don’t hesitate to do that person a favour.

             8 .    Don’t pity people who are disabled, they would rather have your friendship than your sympathy.

             9 .    Talk to people who are not able-bodied so you can better understand what they are dealing with on a daily basis.

        10 .    Never put down people because of their disability, this will only serve as encouragement for the rest of the world to follow in your footsteps and think badly about them.
